Botanical Latin Pronunciation Guide

This guide is the cumulative result of the guides I prepared for Horticulture magazine between 2002 and 2008, which is why some genera are richly represented and others aren’t. In general, the recommended pronunciations accord with older references that I have found to be both consistent and reliable, rather than with current popular usage, which is often inconsistent and unreliable. (For a lengthier discussion of the thinking behind the recommendations, see my article, “How Do You Say That? A Guide to the Perversities of Botanical Latin.”) Particularly vexatious individual cases are noted below.

This isn’t meant to be the last word (ha!) on pronouncing botanical Latin — it’s merely a set of guidelines intended to bolster your confidence and to help you feel more at ease when using botanical names in conversation. You’re certainly free to disagree with me; you may even think I’m a pretentious idiot, but please resist the urge to tell me so.

Periodically I’ll add to the list; my hope is that, over time, it will become increasingly comprehensive and useful.

By the way, be sure to visit the enormously useful and fascinating Dictionary of Botanical Epithets.

Now, go forth and pronounce boldly!

» Note on the pronunciation of the genus Agave: The version given below (or something close to it) is just about the only one you’ll ever hear, whether you’re in the company of novices or experts. It’s a more-or-less Spanish pronunciation, which is not remarkable given the plants’ natural distribution. But the word in fact comes from the Greek agauos, meaning illustrious, and many sane and reliable older references give the pronuciation as uh-GAY-vee. Absolutely, I am not making this up. Of course, if you actually use that pronunciation in the presence of others, they’ll look at you as though you had three heads. Your choice.

» Note on the pronunciation of the genus Penstemon: The version given below gives penstemon people fits. Practically everyone says PEN-stih-mun. In this case, however, I simply can’t yield to popular practice. All the most reliable references insist on pen-STEE-mun, for the reason (clearly not convincing to the masses) that the -stemon part (which means “stamen” in Greek) is spelled with an eta, or long e. Personally, I find that wonderfully persuasive, and am willing to risk ridicule and ostracism in the name of principle. But you will do what you must.
